On writing… Designing Secure IoT Systems

It has been a while since I’ve had a chance to blog, and I have missed it. However, a good chunk of my writing cycles have been spent chugging away at a book! It’s titled, you guessed it… Designing Secure IoT Systems.

The promise of the Internet of Things (IoT) is that computers combined with sensors can help us to effectively analyze, understand, and respond to a variety of situations in our daily lives and work. IoT, with its network of  powerful computers, sensors, actuators, software and algorithms promises to process and crunch all sorts of data to provide recommendations that help us make informed decisions. In a previous post, I described ongoing, real world IoT innovation.

Now, concerning a book, I’ll be the first to admit that there exists a plethora of resources out there on the sometimes annoyingly buzzing  field of IoT. Perhaps, that’s just as it should be, considering the potential impact of a super network of ultra-connected and automated industries (and thus lifestyles) around the world… agriculture, transportation, cities etc.

However, I have decided to focus, as much as is possible, on the future state of IoT, and the problems of security, privacy, and usability that we must solve. It is my hope, perhaps unsurprisingly, that it will be of some use.

Here is my current outline:

Part 1
1 How did we get here? bullet train through the history of computing, the internet and the birth of information security
2 EveryThing needs some Juice
3 The Castles with a Thousand Gates
4 Earth 2040

Part 2

5 Designing IoT applications that scale securely
6 Up!
7 Hello Big Brother
8 Human-Computer & Security Interaction

Part 3
9 A New Market This Way Comes
10 Follow The Money

I realize the titles are almost cryptic, but let’s call it a teaser… I will provide an updated outline next time;)

If you have any ideas or queries about the future of IoT and it’s security,  I would love to hear them. Please feel free to reach out to me at damilarefagbemi(AT)gmail(DOT)com.
